Dearest Ruby

I remember the first time we met – I was feeling a little nervous as Mike had informed me that your nickname among some of his friends was ‘Hitler!’ (You thought that was hilarious.) That still makes me smile to this day. After some initial awkwardness I soon discovered that you had a warm and gentle spirit. We became firm friends and I would spend hours talking with you and listening as you recounted stories of your life in Jamaica. You particularly loved to share the pearls of wisdom that your own mother passed on to you. I saw the pride in your eyes as you walked your son down the aisle on our wedding day, and again later on as you held your precious grandsons for the first time. There are so many fond memories of you, Ruby – memories that I will treasure. Some mornings I wake and for a moment I forget that you’ve gone. I miss you. However, despite the sadness I know that God was ready to call you home. You fought a great fight, you ran the race and you won! The last time we spoke I kissed you as I said goodbye. As I turned to leave your bedside, you whispered ‘I’m praying for you.’ Amazing! You were a great witness and a blessing to others even as you prepared to leave this earth. You can rest now Ruby, in His everlasting arms. I am proud to be called your daughter-in-law. Paulette Johnson
